It is a well-known fact that drinking water is very important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Some of the biggest benefits of regular water intake are that it boosts our energy levels and helps us think and concentrate more easily. Additionally, when we consume more water, our skin becomes more hydrated, fresh, soft, and smooth. In this article, we will tell you about the differences between “hard” and “soft” water and introduce you to White Water. It is known for its taste, and its composition makes it “soft” and suitable for daily consumption because it carries all the minerals our bodies need.
What are the differences between “soft” and “hard” water? What are the advantages of “soft” water?
According to its hardness, natural waters are divided into several groups: very soft, soft, medium-hard, moderately hard, and very hard. Both hard and soft water have their advantages—soft water is gentle on the skin and prevents skin diseases, while hard water containing minerals can prevent heart disease, lower blood pressure, and make our bones stronger through calcium intake.
We know about the harm of hard water in our daily lives—it leaves behind limescale and water spots on glasses, windows, and other surfaces, and it is not beneficial for watering flowers. But is it good for daily consumption? Hard water has a high mineral content, usually calcium and magnesium (Mg2+) ions, and in some cases, other dissolved elements like bicarbonates and sulfates. In some instances, hard water can cause health issues such as dry skin and hair. This happens because of the buildup of calcium and magnesium salts present in the water. Hard water blocks pores and causes skin inflammation.
The opposite concept is soft water—water with low mineral content. It does not change its taste when heated and does not cause kidney problems.
Consistency in taste is precisely one of the great advantages of White Water. It is among the softer mineral waters in Bulgaria. It has a stable physicochemical composition and properties, is rich in silver ions, and its total mineralization is 154 mg/l.
How to determine what type our water is?
Several classifiers have been developed regarding the degree of hardness, but unfortunately, there is no single unified one. It is possible to measure water hardness using water testing kits, which are referred to here as a “water hardness tester.”
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), water hardness is determined by the concentration of dissolved polyvalent cations:
- soft water – 0 to 60 mg/l (milligrams per liter) as calcium carbonate
- moderately hard water – 61–120 mg/l
- hard water – 121–180 mg/l
- very hard water – more than 180 mg/l
Both soft and hard water have their advocates and fans, but Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svetla Staykova, head of the Clinic of Nephrology and Dialysis at St. Marina University Hospital – Varna, explains in an interview with BNT why it is not recommended to drink only hard water: “For example, the drinking water in Varna is among the hardest in our country because it is rich in calcium; however, it should not be consumed constantly. ‘Hard’ water is especially not recommended for people suffering from kidney diseases. For the best balance in the body, it is recommended to alternate between spring, mineral, and table water to avoid getting used to a specific mineralization and to maintain a healthy pH.”
What is the solution then?
To avoid the daily intake of hard water, which, as we have already learned, is not beneficial in such large quantities, we can drink White Water. It springs near the town of Dolna Banya, at the foot of the Rila Mountains, at a depth of 515 m, with a temperature of 21°C. The chemical and mineral composition of the water is unique for Bulgaria. Its low mineralization, silver ion content, and pH of 9.23 make it suitable for daily consumption.

High water quality is guaranteed by the high-tech laboratory at our factory in Dolna Banya. It is certified with specialized ISO, BS OHSAS, and FSSC certificates. Taking care of our health from the inside out should not be underestimated, and good hydration is particularly important for our overall well-being.
That is exactly why we have made every effort to make access to White Water as easy as possible. The beautiful designer bottles with the turquoise logo can be found in retail networks and selected establishments, and through our website, you can order water for your home, office, or event.
